For our fall series, we will focus on Jesus’ sermon on the
mount—Matthew 5 thru 7.
At the end of the sermon, Jesus makes the following promise:
"Anyone who
listens to my teaching and obeys me is wise, like a person
who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in
torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against
that house, it won’t collapse, because it is built on rock.
But anyone who hears my teaching and ignores it is foolish,
like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and
floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will
fall with a mighty crash."
(Matthew 7:24-27)
Jesus is promising us
a durable life if we will do what he teaches us to
do. In this series, we will be talking about the kinds of
things we are supposed to do—covering all areas of life from
money to marriage, from prayer to enemies, from ways we
control others to what our purpose is in the world. All of
these teachings will be framed in the context of Jesus’
basic Kingdom message—Jesus invited people to reorient their
lives around the reality of God’s Kingdom, present in Him
and potentially with all who would follow Him. With
repentance towards Him and dependence upon Him at the
center, we build a rock solid life on His teachings.
